Stefania yelled an angry tirade at me for taking so long and I was so worried she’d read my guilty face and know exactly what had kept me, I stayed quiet and took it.

Dominique gave me a sympathetic look when I got back to my desk, and I spent the rest of the day working with my head down, while my mind lingered again and again over what had happened with Elliot in his bedroom.

I couldn’t stop thinking about it. The smell of his skin and hair, fresh from the shower, the soft, crinkling feather comforter beneath me, and the sound of birds singing in that garden at the back of his house. The feel of his tongue against me in a place I had barely gathered the courage to explore myself was emblazoned across my mind and like a broken reel, it wouldn’t stop playing.

I was shocked at myself, and deeper, in my very heart of hearts, strangely proud. For years in high school, while my friends figured out their sexuality with drunken spin the bottle first kisses, and fumbling in cars after basketball games, I’d been the one at home, hearing about it over the phone. Later in college, it had been the same thing. Not that I hadn’t had the chance in college, more that I hadn’t felt the inclination. My father’s rhetoric was too deeply embedded, it would take a force of nature to shift it. A force like Elliot Winter. I wanted him more than I’d ever wanted anything. Everything about him turned me on, from his arrogant smirk to his challenging banter. The look in his eyes as I came, he had looked at me like I was his saviour, and he was ready to worship at my alter for all time.

I barely did any work. Squirming about on my chair, and having flashbacks of the first orgasm I’d ever had was pretty distracting.

As I left later on, it was already dark and a light drizzle was falling. I’d felt guilty enough about my scandalous activities on company time, I’d stayed to finish up odds and ends. As I stepped out onto the street, my phone rang, the familiar sound of my father’s ringtone sending me scrambling for the handset. He rarely called me during the week. It was like he had sensed the shift in the universe that was his daughter forgetting the commandments, and was calling to check in.

“Hi, dad. What’s up?” I asked immediately.

“Nothing is up. Something has to be up for me to call?” He started, and I tried to head him off before he could get going.

“Of course not, I was just worried,”

“Well, don’t be worried. I wanted to chat about Simone. He likes you, you know,” Vittorio said, in a confidential tone.

“Yeah? He’s nice and all but he’s not really my type,” I hedged, crossing the street at a crowded crosswalk.

“What type? Hard-working? Well off? Healthy? Family minded?” My father rattled the list off so quickly, I knew he had rehearsed for this phone call.
